The film Faust (1926) directed by F. W.Murnau is placed at the edge of German expressionism. It was filmed in the period between the two World Wars and reflects in a way the situation in the defeated Germany after the First World War and before the Nazis came in charge. The music in this film explores the philosophical and metaphysical dimension of Goethe's Faust which is an allegorical poetic drama and how it represents the German soul of this period.
